My Experience

Here’s a little background on my experience in SEO and online marketing. After a few years at the University in Limerick (BA in European Studies, Grad. Dip. in Technical Communication) I worked in various e-learning companies as an Instructional Designer and Editor. Unsatisfied, I left the world of e-learning to go on a voyage of self-discovery.

Jump to 2005, after a year travelling in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Thailand and the US, I returned to Ireland. I officially started my career in online/digital marketing back in 2005, with a job as an Editor at Yahoo! Search Marketing in Dublin. The job at Yahoo! was my start into the world of paid search, and search marketing in general.

I left Yahoo! to go to Vancouver, Canada in 2006.

The image below was from 2008, when I worked at H-Street Media (BetUS.com). I had just gotten laser surgery so had to wear an eye patch. I definitely looked the part for a job on a pirate ship!

From there I had a brief stint at SplitMango, a web design and development company in Vancouver, owned by the Australian entrepreneur David Miller. I was responsible for PPC, SEO and content on a range of client websites.

I then moved over to 6SMarketing, one of Vancouver’s most high profile digital agencies (at the time). I spent more than seven years working there, starting out as a Digital Strategist working in paid search, social media, analytics and SEO, to focusing purely on SEO. By the time I left, I held the title of Search Director, and the company had expanded to Toronto and New York and became one of the most high profile agencies in Canada. 6S Marketing has since rebranded as Major Tom.

I then moved back to Ireland and became Head of SEO at Core, who tout themselves as ‘Ireland’s largest marketing communications company‘. Apart from running Core’s search engine optimisation offering, I was also the go-to person for analytics. My responsibilities included cross-selling and upselling SEO to some of Ireland’s biggest brands.

My first job when I got to Canada was at H-Street Media, which was the sole marketing agency for BetUS.com. BetUS is an online sports betting website and was ranked in the top 1 or 2 positions in Google for some key terms. My five years in that role gave me a wide variety of skills including web design, content editing, paid search management, email marketing, CRO, analytics and search engine optimization (SEO).

After five years in Core I moved to Legacy Communications as SEO Director. I worked on some major brands, and on projects for companies in Ireland, Australia, the UK and the US. After just over a year and half at Legacy, it was time for me to set out on my own.

And so Ahoy Online Marketing was born! There may be stormy seas ahead but I have always wanted to set up my own business and give it an honest go. I’d be happy for you to join me on my voyage.

Like all the great companies, Ahoy started out as an idea on the kitchen table!

Ahoy Online Marketing was registered as a business in Ireland on 3 April, 2025. See Ahoy’s details on the CRO website.

Training

The phrase “those who can’t do, teach” is a popular saying, often used disparagingly, that suggests people who are unsuccessful in a particular field become teachers. After 20+ years working in SEO, I consider myself an expert in the field. I have successfully shared my knowledge through internal training sessions in the agencies that I’ve worked in, through external training for some high-profile companies in both Ireland and in Canada, and I have delivered SEO training online. I also guest lectured at Technological University Dublin (TUD). I enjoy sharing my knowledge and I offer SEO training as a service at Ahoy.

To back up my skills, I have done courses that help me to ‘teach’ or become a better trainer. I have completed a ‘Train the Trainer’ QQI Level 6 certification through the Cavan and Monaghan Education Board (CMEB). QQI is the Irish state agency responsible for promoting the quality, integrity and reputation of Ireland’s further and higher education system. I also completed an Instructor Training program at Langara College in Vancouver, Canada.

Apart from offering SEO training, I also offer analytics, content and other custom digital marketing training courses. Click here to learn more about Ahoy’s Training offering.
